What Is the Difference Between Botox and Dysport?

If you have unwanted lines or wrinkles, there are many ways to treat them. You have probably heard of Botox, the most popular noninvasive cosmetic treatment in the country. While it has not achieved the household-name status of Botox yet, you may have also heard about Dysport. How can you choose between the two products? At Spa Noor in Fall River, MA, we offer both to patients who want to address the signs of aging and can help you understand which is right for you.

What Are Dysport and Botox?

Botox

Botox is a widely used injectable that uses A botulinum toxin to relax the muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles. By preventing the skin from creasing during facial expressions, it can temporarily cause these lines to recede. It is also used to keep new wrinkles from forming.

Dysport

This treatment is extremely similar to Botox. It uses A botulinum toxin in the same way and with the same goal: to create smooth, youthful-looking skin. Despite their similarities, there are a few minor differences between this product and Botox. They include:

  • How the dosage is determined
  • When you see results
  • Which type of A botulinum toxin they use

What Are the Benefits of These Treatments?

They Deliver Noticeably Smoother Skin

If you have tried many topical creams to get rid of your fine lines and wrinkles, you know that most of them don’t have very significant results. In fact, many are just moisturizers. The ones that do work often have a very low concentration of the active ingredient. Injectables are a way to truly make a difference in the appearance of your skin. The science behind them works. When your muscles can’t make the expressions that cause lines, the lines don’t form. Any creases you already have will look smoother after your treatment.

They Can Temporarily Undo the Signs of Aging

Almost everyone gets wrinkles eventually. It’s a natural part of aging. The rate at which we develop them varies person by person, largely because of genetics. At our practice, we believe that everyone should be able to choose how they look and that age is just a number. With injectables, you don’t have to live with your lines and wrinkles should you choose to treat them.

They Can Repair the Effects of Certain Kinds of Damage

For some people, fine lines and wrinkles are signs of damage rather than age. Sun exposure is the #1 cause of premature aging. Other factors, like pollution in the environment, can also cause the skin to develop fine lines and wrinkles early. Injectables can make the evidence of this damage significantly less apparent.

They Treat Fine Lines and Wrinkles After Our Bodies Lose Collagen

Collagen is a protein that helps your skin repair itself when damaged. It maintains the structure and elasticity of the cells, among other functions. When a young person makes a facial expression, his or her skin does not have a crease after the fact because collagen allows it to smooth out. After age 30, our collagen production slows down by 1-2% every year. Without this protein, our muscle contractions cause fine lines that eventually mature into wrinkles.

Injectables like Botox and Dysport inhibit the targeted muscles from making certain expressions. Therefore, they can temporarily keep your skin smooth even without all of the collagen you used to have.

They Can Reduce the Impact of Stress and Insufficient Sleep

We are all leading very busy lives these days. Unfortunately, feeling overwhelmed and not getting enough sleep can cause your body to produce cortisol. This hormone is part of our body’s natural response to danger. It allows us to act quickly and mobilize our physical forces to run or fight. At the same time, it inhibits our ability to produce collagen. That is one of the reasons why a heavy schedule and too many all-nighters can show up on your face in the form of lines and wrinkles.

With everything that you have to worry about, the appearance of your skin shouldn’t add to your list of concerns. These treatments can relax your muscles, smooth out your lines, and give you excellent results that can make you feel more positive.

The Results Look Natural

In the United States, injectables can only be administered by licensed medical professionals. A reputable med spa should have lots of familiarity with these treatments and the expertise needed to create natural-looking results.

When you choose either of these injectables, you can rest assured that your face will not appear “worked on”. At Spa Noor, we treat fine lines and wrinkles with care, giving enough product to achieve smooth skin but not so much as to create a frozen look. For our returning patients, we can adjust the amount based on their preferences and their satisfaction with the previous treatment.

They Are Safe and Convenient

Both of these treatments are FDA-approved for cosmetic use. There is very little risk for side effects, and you won’t need any downtime following your injections. Patients usually go back to working and doing normal activities immediately after. The injections themselves go quickly: usually in less than 15 minutes. For that reason, you could even schedule your appointment during your lunch break. Happily, you don’t have to worry about discomfort during the process, either.

They Don’t Require Surgery

Many patients love these treatments because they are noninvasive and nonsurgical. When used preventively, they can help reduce the need for facelifts and other procedures. People who want to treat their skin in a way that is more effective than over-the-counter products but less extreme than surgery can find a happy middle ground with injectables.

You See the Results Quickly

With both of these injectables, you will see results in a few days. Compared to topical skincare products that take as many as six weeks to make a difference, that is pretty quick. Patients enjoy their results for three to six months. To maintain a smooth look, you just need to have the injections done again when the effects start to wear off.

What Are the Differences Between Dysport and Botox?

Essentially, they are just two different brands. Comparing these two products is like comparing Coke and Pepsi. While there are subtle differences between the two, in the end, they are more similar than they are dissimilar. Many people can’t even distinguish between their results. There are some minor differences that we can note for the sake of comparison, but the important thing is that they are both highly effective.

The Specific Type of Neurotoxin

While both of these treatments use A botulinum toxin, Botox uses onabotulinumtoxinA (ONA) and Dysport uses abobotulinumtoxinA (ABO). The molecules of ABO are smaller than those of ONA, meaning that the two products are measured out differently.

The Dosage

These two products are administered in different dosages. There is a 2.5:1 ratio between them, meaning that 25 units of ABO are roughly equivalent to 10 units of ONA.

When They Were Released

Botox has been around for decades. It was first approved by the FDA in 2002. Since then, millions of people have used it cosmetically. With a lot of time to gain a positive reputation, it has become extremely well-known. Dysport is a little less recognizable in part because it hasn’t been around as long. It was FDA-approved in 2009.

How Quickly They Take Effect

ABO tends to work a little bit faster than ONA. You can expect to see the results in about four days. They will continue to increase in the weeks following your treatment. With ONA, the results set in about a week after you have the injections done.

How They Disperse

ABO tends to treat a slightly broader area than ONA. This can be either an advantage or a disadvantage. During your consultation, you can learn more about what level of dispersal is optimal for the results you want to achieve.

The Cost

ABO is usually a bit less expensive than ONA, although not always. The cost of your treatment will depend on how much product you need to achieve the results that you want.

Which Product Is Right for Me?

The answer to this question will depend on your personal preference. The products themselves are really not very different. They both work effectively and safely to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dysport is essentially a competitor of Botox. In many blind tests that compared their results, most people could not identify which product was used. The important thing to know is that both products are of high quality, so it is a win-win situation.

Choose the Practice Before You Choose the Product

At the end of the day, how the product is administered is more important than which brand you choose. There is an artistry to performing the injections, and you want to choose a practice that is experienced and reputable. Before you choose where you want to have your treatment done, check credentials and ask to see before and after photos of real patients. When administered skillfully, either brand will give you amazing results that you will love.

Our practice is committed to providing top-quality care for each of our patients. We are a small group of medical professionals who are dedicated to offering the best treatments to everyone who chooses our services. We hold ourselves to high standards and actually test each treatment on ourselves before we offer it to the public. Our experience and excellent sense of aesthetics help us deliver patient satisfaction.

Schedule a Consultation

A great way to learn more about these two products is by scheduling a free consultation with us. When you come in, we can answer all the questions you have about either brand. We can look at your skin and discuss your expectations for the outcome of the treatment. We will also show you photos of the results of each. Together, we will make a plan that will give you beautiful, smooth skin. Usually, we can perform the injections right after your consultation, if you choose.
